10 Commandments
Also known as the Decalogue.
A set of about 14-15 different commands and prohibitions that are intended to govern the right human conduct to God and to other people. They are given in passages in two books of the Bible: Exodus 20:217 and Deuteronomy 5:62.
Various religions divide these statements among the Commandments in different ways, and may also translate the Commandments differently.
- I am the Lord your God (used only as a preface in the Anglican church)
- You shall have no other gods before me
- You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God (this is combined with the preceding commandment in the Jewish Church, and with the 2 preceding commandments in the Roman Catholic Church)
- Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
- Honour your father and mother
- You shall not murder (kill)
- You shall not commit adultery
- You shall not steal
- You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour
- You shall not covet your neighbour's house
- You shall not covet your neighbour's wife (this is only a separate commandment in the Roman Catholic Church, all other denominations combine it with the previous commandment)
