In a religious sense, the term involves a person being freed from guilt or sin. In the Roman Catholic Church, a priest can declare the sins of a penitent person to be forgiven if they sincerely plan to avoid such behaviour in the future.

In legal terms, it is the act of a judge or jury declaring a person innocent of a crime.
