Catacomb

A Christian subterranean cemetery built both as a response to overcrowding and shortage of land, and as a need for persecuted Christians to bury their dead secretly. Famous examples include:

  • Catacombs of Rome, Italy
  • Catacombs of Paris, France
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, in Alexandria, Egypt
  • Catacombs of Sacromonte in Granada, Spain.
  • Catacombs of the Convento de San Francisco in Lima, Peru
