Crucifixion
A method of carrying out the death penalty that involved physical abuse of the victim, stripping them of all clothing, tying or nailing their arms and legs to a cross or stake, and abandoning them to die. The person usually suffocated to death when they no longer had the strength to push their bodies up to breathe.
The corpse was often partly eaten by scavengers, and the body was generally denied a proper burial. Crucifixion was widely used within the Roman Empire to execute either slaves or rebels.
