Excommunication
1. The enforced separation of a Christian from their denomination, done for the good of the individual and the faith group, usually with the intent of changing the individual's behaviour so that they can be welcomed back.
2. The exclusion of a member from the Eucharist - not expulsion from the Church. This can happen for such reasons as not having confessed within that year; excommunication can also be imposed as part of a penitential period.
