Lateran Treaty

Created in 1929, a concordat between the Holy See and Italy that created the new sovereign state of the Vatican City, and which returned some of the land of the former papal states to the church.

The Lateran Treaty also declared Roman Catholicism as the only state religion of Italy. The treaty was signed by Cardinal Pietro Gasparri and Benito Mussolini.
